The Flickering Flame and the Circle of Stones
~
dedicated to Jordan, Joe Don, Ishgooda, RavenWolf, Noquisi, Tupac,
Beverly, Morningstar, Tsali, David, Mike and all my other brothers
and sisters here...forgetting no one in my heart...
~
The wind blew strong and cold that night.
The circle fire flickered as the people gathered,
For the north wind blew
And the warmth of hearts recoiled,
Fingers reaching for the pale flame
That flickered in their center.
~
Some had come from far away
And some had always lived in this place.
Together they had made their homes,
Planted their seeds
And fed their children.
~
The hard winter had come
And wood was scarce.
Only ice.
Only snow.
Only cold.
~
But the people could not see this fire,
This precious fire die.
And so, one by one,
They went to their homes
And returned with kindling.
Some had wood.
Some had carved toys.
Some had wooden flutes.
And with loving hands
They cast them to the fire
To feed it;
~
To warm the Shining Ones of the Circle.
For the enemy had attacked
And wounded many.
Pale and faint,
Weakened by the many blows,
They waivered.
"Who stands with us?" they cried.
~
One by one,
A member of each family cried.
"I stand with you!
Firm as Stone!
I shall not move!"
And this loving heart became
A beautiful Stone,
Protecting the People from the Wind
And the Cold.
Reflecting and Protecting
The Flame.
~
In the still star-sparkling skies
There was a sigh of joy
For the beauty of the Circle of Stones
Around the Bright and Leaping Flame
Of the People's hearts,
Which burned brightly on;
Which burns today.

I stand firm with you.
