DANVILLE, Vt. (AP) The parent of a Native American girl who attends Danville High School is objecting to the name Indian as the mascot of the town's schools.
Barbara Albright feels the term is a negative stereotype that violates the school's anti-harrassment policy.
''Why does anyone think a Native American student would NOT feel harassed at a school where stereotypes of her race are perpetuated daily, constantly, everywhere she turns?,'' she wrote in a letter to the school board. ''Why does nobody have an answer to the question of why it is so obviously unacceptable to use an African-American, an Hispanic, or a Jew as a school logo, but that (it) is okay to dehumanize Native Americans?''
This is not the first time that Albright has raised the topic of possible ethnic harassment at Danville School. In her letter, she tells of taking ''a hiatus from posing the question'' two years ago because she was ''so disheartened from the non-answers and minimalizations.''
''But now that the school provides me with a description of what constitutes harassment of an individual or group based on race, and points out to me not only that it is unlawful ... I am gathering my strength to bring it up again,'' she wrote, a reference to the policy contained in the parents' handbook.
Chaunce Benedict, superintendent of Caledonia Central Supervisory Union, said he and the school board are pondering how to address Albright's concern.
''I certainly would recognize the concern if there was a negative representation being made. I haven't, from my point of view, seen that,'' he said. ''Our symbol or team name has been around a long, long time and there is a great deal of allegiance and pride from which it comes.
''If you look back to the history of Danville, Injun Joe is a well-known historical figure,'' said Benedict.
Albright is adamant that the school's team name needs to be changed.
She said a number of other schools, including Johnson State College and
Dartmouth College, have changed their names.
