AN EPISCOPAL APOLOGY , and BAPTISTS THAT SAY:
"BUT THEY WEREN'T WRONG"

[excerpt]
November 15, 1997 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information
Service, 1701 Harns Rd., Oak Harbor, WA 98277) - In a ceremony on
November 1, representatives of The Episcopal Church apologized for the alleged atrocities committed by English colonists against American
Indians. Episcopal Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning asked American Indians to forgive the colonists for calling them "infidels and savages" and for saying that the Indians lived in "darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God."...

There were things about the religious position of the Jamestown colonists  with which we would disagree from a biblical perspective, and we are not ignorant of the fact that Native Indians have been mistreated many times in American history. The Jamestown colonists were not wrong, though, in viewing the Indians as infidels and savages who dwelt in spiritual darkness. Savage simply means uncivilized, barbaric. Infidel means an unbeliever in respect to a particular faith, in the context of the Jamestown settlers, that faith being Anglican and Puritan Christianity. They were correct on both counts. The Indians were uncivilized from a Christian perspective, and they were unbelievers. Further, there is no doubt that the
Indians were living in darkness and ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God....

...The aforementioned Episcopal leaders are confused men who do not believe the Bible. Instead of apologizing for the colonists, they should follow their example and seek to carry the Gospel to those who are lost.....
The Episcopal apology at modern Jamestown is not only unscriptural, it is
foolish. How can someone living today apologize for something done by
men who lived almost four centuries ago? What would the Jamestown
settlers think of Bishop Browning’s apology? They would probably think
he is a biblically ignorant, presumptuous ninny.

Dear readers, do not forget that when groups like Promise Keepers call
for the breaking down of the walls between the denominations, they
refuse to warn their followers of the apostasy of these very
denominations. Those who do lift the voice to warn God’s people of
apostasy and false teaching are not praised by the Promise Keepers and other ecumenists. No, we are slandered, mocked, and labeled Pharisaical hate-mongers.
