There were things about the religious position of the Jamestown colonists
with which we would disagree from a biblical perspective, and we are not
ignorant of the fact that Native Indians have been mistreated many times
in American history. The Jamestown colonists were not wrong, though, in
viewing the Indians as infidels and savages who dwelt in spiritual darkness.
Savage simply means uncivilized, barbaric. Infidel means an unbeliever
in respect to a particular faith, in the context of the Jamestown settlers,
that faith being Anglican and Puritan Christianity. They were correct on
both counts. The Indians were uncivilized from a Christian perspective,
and they were unbelievers. Further, there is no doubt that the
