Frontier gets new mascot
By Associated Press, 1/12/2000 07:55 DEERFIELD, Mass. (AP) After more than two years of debate, court suits and referendums, the Frontier Regional School Committee has voted to change the name of its sports teams from Redskins to Red Hawks. The 4-3 vote adopting the new nickname came Tuesday night after William Smith of Whately, the only member of the School Committee to graduate from the high school, walked out of the meeting. Smith, who had originally supported keeping the Redskins nickname, but later said he was concerned about the possibility that the town would be sued by those who considered the nickname demeaning to American Indians, said he left in protest of the way the meeting was conducted. Last month, former committee chairman Karl Koenigsbaur of Deerfield resigned, blaming in part the wear and tear of the protracted debate over the Redskins nickname. A recent poll by students narrowly favored the Red Hawks nickname over
Chiefs, the second-place choice proposed by a school committee. The other
alternatives had been Red Wings and Trailblazers.
