Dear Brothers and Sisters in the struggle.

It was reported to me today at 3:30 PM EST.  By Marvin Young Dog, AIM Director of Veteran Affairs.  That the town of White Clay Nebraska has been secured and is currently/permanently occupied by THE AMERICAN INDIAN MOVEMENT and THE OGLALA NATION.  Citing the treaty of 1868 and the 1889 Dawes allotment
Act, The area known as White Clay has always been part of The Pine Ridge Reservation and is simply being occupied by the legal custodians of that land.
A call to action has gone out from The Leadership of AIM and The Oglala nation for warriors to proceed to White Clay to maintain and defend our land and our people.
I will forward additional info as it becomes available.  Matt Sherman Madage Monig

STILL    STRONG!

CONFIRMATION:
May be gotten from the Oglala Tribal Office at 605-867-5821
(this is the original number given for the first march on White Clay)

They will confirm the occupation, but are giving out no further details at this time.

                                WHITE CLAY UPDATE

E-mail Address: MADAGE@aol.
Greetings
I have just got off the phone with AIM leadership at Pine Ridge. The encampment at White Clay has been named CAMP JUSTICE.  At present this is not a military style occupation but our warriors have brought the town to a stand still.
The AIM leadership has been meeting throughout the night and have decided to proceed via legal avenues, while at the same time maintaining our encampment at White Clay.  I was advised a full blown occupation did not take place Saturday due to the large number of elders & children at the march. However the town has been effectively closed down.

I have been requested by the AIM leadership to put out a call for warriors to be at CAMP JUSTICE, AKA White Clay this Saturday early in the morning for a show of strength and commitment to our people.  This action will most probably include defending the lives of our people and Indian land.  At this time, Camp Justice is no place for children.  Destruction of property is prohibited by AIM leadership.
The property and buildings at White Clay will be turned into schools and
facilities for our people.  If you come to Camp Justice, please understand conditions are primitive     Please understand this action is not of the tribal leadership.
It is of the Oglala people AMERICAN INDIAN MOVEMENT, and those people dedicated to justice.

It is my plan at this time to leave from Columbus, Ohio on Thursday morning.
My route will be through Indianapolis, Peoria, Des Moines. Please let me know if anyone wants to caravan or donate much needed supplies.  I will confirm that later today. Thanks for all the prayers and words of support.

IN THE SPIRIT OF CRAZY HORSE,
                                 STILL   STRONG!

Date: Fri, 9 Jul 1999 09:16:11 -0400

Ish: Please send this far and wide.
For everyone else that may read this. I have asked Ish to forward this to all lists. We are not connected into other lists at this time as we have only recently got a computer that really works well and has the capacity to handle large amounts of input.  We have received several forwarded copies of comments from native and non-native people concerning White Clay.   First, if there is ever a time when unity is needed it is now. However, we must also work with harmony as well.  Second: Now is not the time for any one to even try to second guess the decisions that our AIM leadership or the Oglala people supporting Camp Justice are making. They are the ones on site.  For those who wish to continue muddy the waters with commentary, or not believe this is action is real, that is your privledge. However, remember by doing so, you are working against unity and harmony. You are also working against many that have spent their lifetime working for the safety, health, and preservation of their communities and nations.  You are helping to perpetuate the cultural genocide of these communities and nations. There are many of us that have known what was coming this way for a while. There are many of us that have been in touch with those is SD that are active and have been active for many years, dealing with not only White Clay, but other issues as well. Our prayers are with the grandmothers, aunts, and cousins who have been and still are taking an active role in establishing Camp Justice. Our prayers are with the warriors and AIM leadership that care so deeply for all native people. Our prayers are with the Oglala people.  Even though we personally have contact in SD on a daily basis, it is hard to keep track of everything that is happening or when it is going to happen, etc.  We will not even try to guess. We are not on site, yet.

For those who wish to make donations, you may also send them to our address. Please no checks. It takes them to long to clear the banks. You may make the money orders out to Antoinette Red Woman, or me. Make sure you include an address so the proper accounting can be done.

WHITE CLAY UPDATE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the struggle,
I have received some flack for using the term "Warrior" in my recent postings and updates. Apparently there are some who have not moved beyond the Hollywood definition. We believe a warrior works for the common good of our people. A warrior's path in conflict is that of peaceful resolution, and intelligent reasoning.  A warrior may be one who helps the Elders, goes for groceries, changes a flat tire for someone or possibly be called upon to defend our people and land.  It was in that total context I employed the term warrior.
I sincerely regret having offended anyone. The call for action was one of non-violence. The organizers have stated no weapons are permitted.(nor were they ever encouraged}.  For the purpose of solidarity, below are the phone numbers of the organizers. To avoid confusion I will provide no more updates unless requested to do so by the National Field Director, Nowa Cumig Dennis Banks.
My travel plans at this time are undetermined.
                                   With respect,

Ish: Please send this out also to all lists. It seems a few need a little bit more of an explanation on detail day to day business.

As an AIM chapter we are obligated to help National AIM in whatever efforts is undertaken.. We gave our address only as an alternative. There are many non-native and native people in the North East who know David and I.  They may feel more comfortable giving to their local chapter or those they know. We only made the offer to use our address, also, to let those who may not know where we are located to know where we are. No one is here is trying to interfer with anyone elses efforts. We do not work that way. We work as a chapter. Funding for large projects come from many different sources. We are only trying to do our jobs here in the Northeast.

I just got off the phone with Floyd Hand. It is 9:06 Arizona time and he asked that the following information be sent out.

DONATIONS ARE TO BE SENT ONLY TO HIM OR RUSSELL MEANS.  The address has been sent out however, they now have a bank account to make things a little less confusing. The tracking number is 10410371914 and account number is 297658.
The bank is Stockmens National Bank in Rushville(note: correction received 7-09-99 from AIM AZ, original note stated "Rushmore", thanks), Nebraska. You can take the donation to your nearest bank and have them do a bank to bank transfer. This is the fastest and safest way to get the money to WhiteClay. Floyd is asking that all donations be made to that account. This should clear up any confusion about who is permitted to receive donations for WhiteClay. They will be needing money for food, oil, gas, bail, etc. He also asked  for anyone out there who has a credit card and would be willing to use it to
secure port-a-potties for the next 30 days. If you are able to do that,
please contact Floyd personally at 605-867-5762.   They are still asking for people to come and join Camp Justice however, please heed the warnings...Don't travel through Nebraska at night (especially Indians),  please come prepared to listen to the wishes of the Lakota people and respect their ways....NO WEAPONS, NO DRUGS, NO ALCOHOL. This is also not a place for children.  Posts stating that donations  be sent anywhere other than the
above mentioned bank account or to Floyd and Russell are to be disregarded.

T
Secretary, AIM AZ.

I spoke with Marvin Youngdog this morning at approximately 6 a.m. Arizona time. He reports that things are calm. As Mike reported yesterday, the Governor met with the people there and Marvin said it looks promising. He also said that the governor was "shaken up" when he viewed the murder scene.
The reports that the KKK and other militias being there is true,
unfortunately, an eyewitness stumbled on to a KKK meeting - hoods and all- but for now they are not causing any problems. It appears that they are getting motel rooms around the area and just watching. Let's hope that is all they do. Marvin and Natilie both said that there are "a lot of nervous people" around the area due to the fact that the treaty says the reservation extends 50 miles into Nebraska making much of their farm land, towns, etc legally belonging to the reservation. This makes for some nervous and tense people. However, everyone is calm, there is a warrior society protecting Camp Justice and other societies on alert. They wanted me to remind everyone that monetary donations are still needed. Please send what you can to Camp Justicec/o Tom Poor Bear P.O. Box 823, Pine Ridge, South Dakota  57770.
I was also told that if people would like to send food donations that would be greatly appreciated also. These can be sent to Tom Poor Bear c/o General Delivery Pine Ridge South Dakota  57770. They are trying to feed a lot of people, sometimes 200 or more and can use any help with food that can be sent. They would also like to thank those who have already sent in donations. They appreciate your help and support and wish that they could thank each and every one of you personally. Please know that they do appreciate these donations and the help and support they see coming from everyone. We will keep everyone as updated as we can so please bear with us. Thank you.

                  >>>> CAMP JUSTICE <<<<
                         For immediate release
                            July 15, 1999

CAMP JUSTICE, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota:

-Once again, the Oglala Lakota have made history.  In an unprecedented move, representatives from the United States Government, as well as the Governor of Nebraska, met with the TRADITIONAL people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

-On July 13, 1999, United States Attorney Tom Monaghan, Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns, and other Federal and state official met with the Oglala Lakota people at CAMP JUSTICE on the South Dakota/Nebraska border.

-Although the Governor had originally agreed to a closed meeting, he was received at the unincorporated, lawless village of White Clay, NE by over150 Oglala Lakota people.  While aides feared for his safety, the Governoragreed to an open forum meeting at the peace camp.

-Representatives for CAMP JUSTICE provided the Federal and state officials with the following list of demands for justice:

  • * Demand a full and complete investigation on all human and civil rights violations which have occured in Sheridan County, NE since the legalized hanging of Lakota people ceased, to the present day murders of Martin Bull Bear, Ron Hard Heart, Wally Black Elk, Little John Means, and many others.
  • *Immediate closure of all alcohol establisments in White Clay until  a license is issued by the Secretary of the Interior or his representative.  See 1904 Presidential Executive Order.
  • *Return of original designated Pine Ridge Agency lands (which includes White Clay, NE) as noted in the 1868 Treaty with the U.S. Government.
  • *Creation of a permanent Civil Rights Office in Sheridan County, NE to address human and civil rights violations against indigenous Lakota people.
  • *Immediate removal of Sheridan County Sheriff Terry Robbins for cover-up of Deputy Randy Metcalf's criminal activities against indigenous Lakota people.
  • *Establish a law requiring data collection on all traffic stops to
  • include state, county, and municipal law enforcement to record the race of every motorist they stop.  See North Carolina law.

  •

-Importantly, on July 10, 1999, eviction notices were posted on four alcohol establishments and 1 grocery store in the controversial village of White Clay,NE.  At the July 13, 1999 meeting with the Governor, the Oglala Lakotapeople informed him that there were 28 days left on the eviction notices andthat it is their intent to enforce those notices if the business owners do notcomply.  The Governor stated that he would meet with his aides to develop task forces to investigate the issues at hand.  State/Federal representatives have requested the Oglala Lakota stop their weekly "WALK FOR JUSTICE" to White Clay until they can set up the task forces.

-The Oglala Lakota people responded by saying they will continue their "WALK FOR JUSTICE" until justice is served!  They are also calling for an economic boycott of all Nebraska retailers.  The next march is scheduled for July 17, 1999.  Rally at 10:00 a.m., followed by a peaceful march at 12:00 p.m.
