OF NUCLEAR REACTORS IN MICHIGAN
1962: Big Rock Point plant opens near
Charlevoix, the state's first nuclear plant.
1967: Plans announced for Consumers
Power reactor in Midland.
1972: Reactor problems at Fermi I force
plant to permanently shut down.
1984: Poor public relations and high
costs force Consumers Energy to drop Midland nuke plans.
1988: Fermi II opens in Monroe. Supplies
enough power for 1 million consumers.
1994: Defective welds reported in one
dry storage cask at Pallisades.
1997: Damage to emergency safety systems
leads to shutdown of two reactors at D.C. Cook plant in Bridgman.
1997: Big Rock voluntarily switches
off. The plant had an excellent safety record, but ran out of space to
store waste.
1998: Public meetings held to discuss
removal of Fermi I, kept in mothballs for morethan 25 years.
