NAGPRA RESOURCES

For the past two years the NCSHPO and the National Conference of State Legislatures, with help from a grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, have been compiling a "user-friendly" database of all state preservation legislation.
I am happy to report that the initial test version is now up and running as part of the NCSL's home page.

The individual entries contain all the pertinent legal citations to allow users to retrieve the actual statute language from State law books. However, our goal in this project was to provide a plain-english summary for each statute. There is a short list of Primary Topics to speed searches, and a longer list of Secondary Topics which can be typed into a box to further narrow searches.

NATIVE AMERICAN CONSULTATION DATABASE A Cooperative Project Consultation with Native Americans is critical in planning many Federal projects. The Native American Consultation Database is an easy way to identify a current contact for each Indian tribe, Alaska Native corporation, and Native Hawaiian organization. Information obtained from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Indian Claims Commission, and directly from tribal leaders is available for all 771 Federally recognized Indian tribes (including Alaska Native villages), Alaska Native corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations.
The database can be searched for contact names by entering the name of a tribe or reservation, the name of a particular state or county, or the name of a Federal administrative unit. County information is available for the lower 48 states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Only U.S. Air Force installations are currently accessible by administrative unit. The Native American Consultation Database is not a comprehensive source of information, but provides an easy way to begin the consultation process. Each tribal record includes the name, address, and telephone number of the official tribal contact(s). Some Indian tribes have also provided additional information regarding geographic areas or types of objects in which they are particularly concerned. ...

"Compilation of State Repatriation,
Reburial and Grave Protection Laws"
State laws often require treatment of burial sites and associated resources, and most carry penalties for failure to comply. In an effort to provide guidance to field personnel, NRCS National Headquarters contracted for a review of state laws pertaining to unmarked burials. This report provides a state-by-state analysis of statutes dealing with reburial of human skeletal remains, repatriation of human skeletal remains and grave goods and/or unmarked grave protection. A comparative matrix accompanies the report. ...
