Subject: Rededication of Monument to the Wyandots
On a cold day in November 1997, a monument was erected on the grounds
of the Wyandotte County Community College, Wyandotte County, Kansas, in
commemoration of the sale of the eastern half of Wyandotte County, Kansas,
to the Wyandot by the Delaware. Deborah Nichols spoke on behalf of
the Delaware (Lenape), Eric Munson (Munsee Delaware), played one of his
hand-crafted cedar flutes, Hal
Walker spoke for the Unified Governments of Wyandotte County and
Kansas City, Kansas, and Chief Janith K. English spoke for the Wyandot
Nation of Kansas.
On Sunday, November 22, 1998, at 1:00 pm, one year after the original
dedication and the addition of another plaque and an eagle,
the monument will be rededicated to all immigrant tribes of Wyandotte County:
DELAWARE, THE LENAPE: 1829
MUNSEE: 1837
SHAWNEE: 1826
WYANDOT: 1843
Dedicatied to the Native American "Immigrant Tribes" which were forcibly removed from their homelands to this country in the 19th century and their unique role in the development and history of Wyandotte County.
All Native Peoples, particularly Delaware (Lenape), Munsee, Shawnee
and Wyandot Brothers and Sisters are strongly encouraged to attend this
rededication in honor of our ancestors.
