Gwe Gwe

About hunting right: the Longhouse people from Wendake have being fighting for the last 10 years for it. Lately the band council, without consultation with the huron population, signed a agreement with Québec. This agreement allowed the Huron to hunt only during one week in a certain period of the year (fall). The Longhouse people hunted that year of 1995 outside of this period written on this agreement. So, the Government officers came and seized our canoes, mooses and charged us of illegal moose hunting.

The Longhouse people got a loan from the bank for $15,000 in 1995 to defend in "Justice". Before we appear in Court we have time to spend all our money in different work that our lawyer did, so the Longhouse people ran out of money last march. The Longhouse people finaly appeared in Court june 1998. Now we have to pay an other bill of $5,000, but we do not have money anymore and every ones can not afford to pay it.

We asked on internet to help us, but we received nothing. There are a lot people out there on the internet whose say that they beleive in Native Rights but when it came the time to help really, those people are not helping.....

Kwe,

there may be people with Huron blood within the Mi'kmaq and Malecite Nations, of this I am not sure.  The only person in this area so far, as I mentioned, is Paul Gros-Louis from Nine Mile River in Prince Edward Island.

If you have CDROM or books available now, let me know the prices.  I am eager to start learning our language as soon as I can.

As for my Grandmother she is not sure what she wants me to do.  I do not know what happened to her family, except that it had something to do with not wanting to live under Indian Act.  This all happened during 1870's and 80's, and is still with her today.  To her it is some kind of secret and I do not know if she will ever tell.

For me this contact with you, Ish and Ted Warrow has been good for me. I have been looking forward to getting Email every day.  It is a good connection.

My Grandmother first started talking of family history when we were very young, but stopped.  In a way I think that I always believed in the beliefs of our Huron ancestors.  I quit the Armed Forces, after 9 years, because of Oka Crisis in 1990, and have lived with traditional beliefs ever since.  It is the only way for us to get stronger.

Indian Act governments cannot help for the future, only the Longhouse and our traditional Elders and leaders.  This I believe and have fought for with the Mi'kmaq Nation here.  I was War Chief of Prince Edward Island for 3 years before coming to Nova Scotia.

Fishing rights, hunting rights, Indian Act chiefs selling the People out...these are things that are the same everywhere.  Only through the traditional ways of our ancestors will we become strong again.
