The following site has come to my attention which focuses on the quebec government accomplishments in regards to negotiations with the aboriginal population in Quebec. I would like to address the portion which bears on our people, the Huron-Wendat on Wendake.
The government site can be found at the following URL:
Huron-Wendat Signing of an agreement on moose hunting that establishes hunting procedures for the Huron-Wendat for the 1995 season in the Laurentides wildlife sanctuary.
Khwe,
The Government recognized Chief (not supported by the traditional people) is signing an agreement which does away with the hunting rights as granted in the Murray treaty. My cousins in Quebec were in a barricaded situation about a year ago that ended when the police and RCMP confiscated their equipment, moose and canoes for hunting at what Quebec considered to be an "out of season" time period. The Murray Treaty grants Quebec to the Huron-Wendat establishing that they are permitted to hunt within these territories at any time and that these rights shall be protected by Quebec. This agreement signed by the Chief sets a limited time period for hunting which does not correspond with the feast times of the traditionals, when moose is served.
Notice this is the Quebecois government "accomplishments". Not the peoples'.
Any on this list who have more complete information regarding this situation are invited to comment.
